What a year 2020 was! Ravaged by a global pandemic, one that continues to turn  most lives upside down: from  severe job cuts to closure of well-established businesses, to people getting separated from their loved ones for long periods of time to so much more! It was  a year in which  humanity had to stop in its tracks and look itself in the mirror to reflect on what really matters. Kenyans, like most of their fellow global citizens , have shown exceptional resilience and unity of purpose during these trying times.

A lot can be said about the trials in 2020 , and certainly their effect on each of us.Despite the tough year, as always, every extraordinary event comes with its fair share of lessons for us all.

Adapting to Change

They say change is the gateway to growth. The events in 2020 may have pushed us to the wall, and left some emotionally, physically and mentally wounded. Despite these challenges, we saw how certain situations pushed us to find solutions to predicaments we had long procrastinated about;something remarkable came out of it. We saw how people innovated and changed how they live and work. From starting totally new businesses, previously not envisioned to changing their very way of life; who would have thought you could completely shut down your office or hustle and permanently work from home! Businesses that have usually operated in the periphery now took centre stage such as delivery services, online grocery shopping among others. Most organisations were forced out of their comfort zone and had to accelerate adoption of technology in order to survive in this new dispensation. The pandemic not only changed our everyday lives but also shifted how we think, making us more adaptable and resilient .

 Preparation Pays

We can all agree that this is something we never saw coming.. The global pandemic saw many people lose their jobs and, for others, businesses went south. What did this unpredictable environment bring to light? The fact that we may not know what the future holds, but we sure can plan for it. The  value of saving and investing has never been as critical as it is now.  Should we face an eventuality in the future, we have learnt that it is always a good idea to have a safety net, say in the form of an emergency fund, with a reliable company. The pandemic has also been a true test of the resilience of most individuals and companies.

 Humanity is Alive & Well

The year 2020 taught us the value of humanity.. When we needed them the most, they showed up with an extra plate of food, an opportunity or even just a call to lift our spirits. For that, we should be grateful and extend the same courtesy to those around us. #PayItForward!

Health Is Indeed Wealth

It might sound  cliché, but health is truly wealth. We should all strive to have an intentional and proactive financial, physical, mental and emotional wellness plan. With the pandemic came the realization that leading a healthy lifestyle could alleviate and mitigate against a number of problems. Going into 2021, a deliberate approach towards health should be top of the list. Your future self will thank you for it.

In summary, the pandemic taught us that there is no limit to what we can become or achieve. We were forced to play the roles of teachers, amateur chefs, plumbers, cleaners, entertainers all rolled into one. With both the good and bad experiences, we have emerged stronger with a resilient spirit. Here’s to thriving in 2021!
